Don’t forget to change your filters. You might be surprised to know that the indoor air we breathe is actually more polluted than outdoor air. Why does this matter? Because your air conditioner has to work that much harder when the air filters are dirty. Changing your filters regularly keeps your HVAC System working properly and your energy bills low.
If you live in the city, the air in your home may be more polluted with dust, molds and pollens. Your air conditioning system air filters should be changed on a regular basis to keep it running smoothly. An HVAC system that works harder than necessary is costing you money! Clean filters reduce pollutants and contaminants like allergens, pet dander, mold and dust from your home.
With more people working from home, let’s make sure your indoor air is allergen free and comfortable! With that in mind, here are a couple of tips to keep in mind:
- It’s recommended you change filters every 30 days for the cheaper fiberglass filters and 90 days for pleated air filters, which can last up to three months, depending on the manufacturer. Please follow the instructions that come with your filter for the recommended changing schedule.
- Asthma / Allergies. If you have an asthma or allergy sufferer at home, change your filters every 6 weeks or more, to keep indoor air quality clean.
- Pets. Our four-legged family members can shed, have odors and drag dirt in from the outdoors. All of this can build up in your home. If so, change your filters regularly.
- The size of your home. Larger homes circulate more air. The filters may need to be changed more frequently.
As you can see, there really are no strict guidelines for changing your filters. However, maintaining your HVAC System and changing the filters on a regular basis can keep you from having to make costly air conditioning repairs and can help prolong the life of your AC system. So do yourself, your lungs, and your pocketbook a favor and don’t forget to change your filters.
